Iowa Bar Exam Information

In Iowa, graduation from ABA-accredited law school is required to sit for the bar exam.

The MEE portion of the examination consists of questions selected by the board from the following subjects:

  • Criminal law and procedure
  • Evidence (based on the Federal Rules of Evidence)
  • Family law
  • Business associations
  • Agency and partnership
  • Corporations and LLCs
  • Conflict of laws
  • Uniform Commercial Code
  • Negotiable instruments (Commercial Paper) (Art. 3)
  • Secured transactions (Art. 9)
  • Constitutional law (Federal)
  • Contracts (including Uniform Commercial Code (Sales) (Art. 2))
  • Federal civil procedure
  • Real property
  • Torts
  • Trusts and Estates
  • Decedents’ estates
  • Trusts and future interests

Multi State Performance Test (MPT) consists of two ninety-minute sessions, and one performance test question per session.  Multi State Bar Examination (MBE) consists of two three-hour sessions and 100 multiple choice questions per session.  Bar application fee is $325.00.
